In just over 2 weeks (June 8th) the Minnesota State Championship Series will be hosting its 2nd event of 2008, The Afton Avalanche.

Last year 316 racers fought it out for the top spots in the Afton Avalanche.  Afton Alps is one of the most challenging and demanding courses of the series. You will find plenty of steep climbs, crazy fast descents, and technical features over the 6 mile course.  The LCR race team provides the trail work and design so you can be sure its a great ride.

Update from Larry Sauber – Afton Alps Dirt Boss –

“The course will be similar to last year’s routes.   The Slalom section near the Meadows Chalet has been rerouted.  The Experts/ Comp will get the bonus climb of Manhandler/ Whistler with the DLA drop.

There will be some reroutes along the open slopes, so the flow of the open fields will be different. Also, the Valley View single-track drop is temporarily closed due to the grass climb out being covered with the erosion mats.

There have been natural features and slight reroutes of the single-track, for those that have not ridden Afton since last June expect some bonus technical trail. ”

The Afton Alps trail system opened for riding on May 17th.  You can now head on over to Afton to preride the course. Afton Alps is an $8 per rider pay trail, built on one of the metro areas larger ski hills.  The hours the trails are open for riding are:

Monday - Sunday: 7 a.m. - Sunset (all trails must be cleared by sunset)

The trail system features signage separating the trails into sections which allows the rider to select how much of a challenge they wish to experience. All routes do involve some steep climbs.  To break it up, stop at the chalet for a cold drink and some hot food.

If you haven't registered yet, you can do so HEREOn line registration ends at 10:00 PM on June 5th
